Eine Plattform für engagierte Kultur

Die 2003 in Petersburg gegruendete Plattform Chto delat? / What is to  
be done? begreift sich als Ort zwischen Theorie, Kunst und  
politischem Aktivismus, der in seinen Arbeiten und Aktivitaeten  
koordiniert wird von einer Arbeitsgruppe des gleichen Namens, zu der  
Kuenstler, Kritiker, Philosophen und Schriftsteller aus Petersburg,  
Moskau und Nizhny Novgorod zaehlen.

Chto delat? moechte den Dialog und die Diskussion zwischen  
unterschiedlichen Positionen ueber die Politisierung der  
Wissensproduktion und ueber die Positionierung von Kunst und Poetik  
in diesem Prozess anfachen und vertiefen. Miteinander kooperierende  
Initiativen, "temporaere Kunst-Sovjets", sollen angestoßen werden,  
die von Anfang an in die Entstehung verschiedener kultureller  
Projekte eingebunden werden. Diese "temporaeren Kunst-Soviets"  
koennen als Prototypen eines sozialen Modells verstanden werden, das  
in der Lage ist, seine Ziele unabhaengig zu formulieren und zu  
realisieren und die Funktion einer alternativen Kraft, eines offenen  
Systems für Interaktionen mit der Gesellschaft als Ganzes zu  
uebernehmen.

Anhand der Arbeit mit diesem Modell fuehren Chto delat? miteinander  
kooperierende Kunstprojekte durch, darunter Videoarbeiten,  
Installationen, oeffentliche Aktionen, Radioprogramme und  
kuenstlerische Betrachtungen des staedtischen Raums. Zuletzt "Drift –  
Narvskaya Zastava" (2004-2005), eine gemeinschaftliche Untersuchung  
einer konstruktivistisch-proletarischen Nachbarschaft in Petersburg,  
"Kronstadt Forever" (2005), eine Ausstellung ueber die  
widerspruechliche Hinterlassenschaft des Raetekommunismus in der  
fruehen Sowjetunion und seiner polemischen Verquickung mit dem  
Anarchismus, und "Self-Education" (2006), eine internationale  
Ausstellung und ein Seminarprogramm, das sich der Produktion und  
Verbreitung alternativer Wissensformen widmete und das die  
emanzipatorischen Traditionen einer vielfaeltigen, didaktischen und  
autodidaktischen Praxis weiterentwickelte.

Als redaktioneller Ausschuss veroeffentlicht die Arbeitsgruppe Chto  
delat? eine englisch-russische Zeitung mit besonderem Fokus auf die  
kuenstlerisch-intellektuelle Situation in Russland. Die Zeitung zielt  
darauf, die Kultur des heutigen russischen Neo-Kapitalismus zu  
problematisieren und ihr entgegenzuwirken, sowie gleichzeitig die  
hier herausgearbeiteten Problematiken in den Kontext paralleler  
Entwicklungen an anderen Orten zu stellen. Chto delat? versucht  
außerdem, die unterdrueckten und verhinderten Moeglichkeiten  
innerhalb der sowjetischen Geschichte in ihrem Verlauf zu verfolgen  
und nach Mitteln ihrer Aktualisierung zu suchen. Jede Ausgabe der  
Zeitung bezieht Kuenstler, Kritiker, Aktivisten und Philosophen in  
den redaktionellen Prozess ein, das Ergebnis sind theoretische  
Essays, Kunstprojekte, Uebersetzungen, Umfragen, Dialoge und Comic  
Strips. In der Regel wird die Publikation zu einem besonderen Anlass  
hergestellt und gratis im Rahmen von Ausstellungen, Symposien,  
Konferenzen, sozialen Foren und Treffen verteilt, wo sie ein weites  
kulturell-interessiertes und aktives Publikum erreicht.

Freitag, 16.03.2007 - Workshop

Am Freitag den 16.03.2007 findet ein geschlossener Workshop zum Thema  
"Aktualisierungen und Geschichtsbegriffe" statt. Teilnehmende sind  
Roger Behrens, Alice Creischer, Hans-Joachim Lenger, Esther Leslie,  
Dmitry Vilensky, David Riff und der Aktualisierungsraum (Nina  
Koeller, Kerstin Stakemeier). Der Workshop bietet den  
programmatischen Einstieg in den Aktualisierungsraum Hamburg.
Die eingeladenen TeilnehmerInnen stellen je eine Aktualisierung oder  
eine Problematisierung der Geschichte als Fortschrittsverlauf zur  
Diskussion. So wie der Aktualisierungsraum selbst handelt auch der  
Workshop davon, die herrschende Geschichtsschreibung konkret in Frage  
zu stellen und praktisch wie theoretisch gefuehrte Kaempfe um  
Befreiungen anzusteuern. Wie koennen Aktualisierungen die Potentiale  
der Geschichte ergreifen und erneuern? Was sind Beispiele fuer eine  
solche Praxis?

Der gesamte Workshop wird in Video und Audio aufgezeichnet,  
nachtraeglich transkribiert und geschnitten und ist als Film im Raum  
sowie als Text auf der Webseite verfuegbar.


Der Aktualisierungsraum

Der Aktualisierungsraum ist ein nicht-kommerzielles Kunst- und  
Ausstellungsprojekt in Hamburg, initiiert von Nina Koeller (Berlin)  
und Kerstin Stakemeier (Hamburg). Er handelt von der Gegenwart  
derjenigen Vergangenheit, die unabgeschlossen blieb und blickt  
zurueck aus einem bestimmten Interesse: die Vergangenheit soll nicht  
an die Gegenwart verloren gegeben werden. Stattdessen werden  
Fragmente der Vergangenheit im Raum aktualisiert.

Ueber einen Zeitraum von zwoelf Monaten werden zwoelf KuenstlerInnen,  
KuenstlerInnengruppen, MusikerInnen und andere ProduzentInnen  
eingeladen, je für einen Monat eine Aktualisierung zu realisieren.  
Ein Fragment wird aus der Geschichtsschreibung herausgegriffen - ein  
Kunstwerk, eine Erfindung, ein Ereignis, ein Song - um es in die  
Gegenwart zu ziehen, herauszufinden, was die Konsequenzen seiner oder  
ihrer Aktualisierung sind.

Am Donnerstag, den 15.03.2007 eroeffnen wir den Aktualisierungsraum  
mit der russischen KuenstlerInnengruppen Chto delat? /// What is to  
be done?: A platform for engaged culture (Petersburg/Moscow/Nizhny  
Novgorod), in den Folgemonaten sind Projekte u.a. mit Henry VIII’s  
Wives (Berlin/Glasgow/Kopenhagen), Nine Budde (Berlin), Melvin Moti  
(Rotterdam), School of Zuversicht (Hamburg), Ben Watson und Thomas  
Baldischwyler (London/Hamburg), Ginger Brooks Takahashi, Ulrike  
Mueller (New York), Katrin Bahrs, Ruth May, Susanne Winterling  
(Hamburg/Berlin), sowie Alexandra Bircken, Nicole Wermers (Koeln/ 
Hamburg/London) geplant.

In jedem Monat wird zu dem jeweiligen Projekt ein eintaegiger  
Workshop stattfinden, der das politische und kuenstlerische  
Produktionsumfeld des Aktualisierten und der Aktualisierung, der  
Historie und der Gegenwart, aufarbeitet. Beide werden im Archiv  
dokumentiert und miteinander verbunden. Neue rote Faeden sollen durch  
die (Kunst)Geschichte gesponnen werden. An der Universitaet Lueneburg  
findet ein projektbegleitendes Seminar mit StudentInnen der  
Kulturwissenschaft statt, in dem gemeinsam weitere Aktualisierungen  
erarbeitet und ausgefuehrt werden.

Der Aktualisierungsraum wird gefoerdert durch die Stiftung Kunstfonds  
und die Hamburgische Kulturstiftung.

Chto delat? /// What is to be done?
A platform for engaged culture

Founded in early 2003 in Petersburg, the platform Chto delat?/What is  
to be done? is a space between theory, art, and political activism.  
The platform's work is coordinated by a workgroup of the same name:  
its members include artists, critics, philosophers, and writers >from  
Petersburg, Moscow, and Nizhny Novgorod.

Chto delat hopes to spark a dialogue of different positions about the  
politicization of knowledge production and about the place of art and  
poetics in this process,  triggering collaborative initiatives in the  
form of “temporary art soviets,” which are involved in the making of  
different cultural projects from their earliest phases onward. These  
“temporary art soviets” could be understood as a prototypical social  
model, capable of formulating and realizing its goals independently,  
taking on the function of an alternative power, an open system for  
interaction with society at large.

Working with this model, Chto delat carries out collaborative art  
projects, including video works, installations, public actions, radio  
programs, and artistic examinations of urban space. Recent projects  
include "Drift – Narvskaya Zastava" (2004-2005), a community- 
examination of a constructivist-proletarian neighborhood in  
Petersburg, “Kronstadt Forever,” (September 2005), an exhibition  
examining the contradictory legacy of council communism in the early  
Soviet Union and its polemic intersection with anarchism, and “Self- 
Education” (September 2006), an international exhibition and seminar  
program dedicated to spreading and producing alternative forms of  
knowledge that continue and further develop the emancipatory  
traditions of a variety of didactic and autodidactic practices.

As an editorial committee, the workgroup Chto delat publishes an  
English-Russian newspaper with a special focus on the Russian  
artistic-intellectual situation. The newspaper seeks to problematize  
and counteract the culture of present Russian neo-capitalism, setting  
it into the context of parallel developments elsewhere. It also  
attempts to trace the potentialities of the Soviet past repressed in  
the course of Soviet history, searching for means of their  
actualization. Each issue of the newspaper draws artists, critics,  
activists and philosophers into a heated editorial process, which  
results in theoretical essays, art projects, open-source  
translations, questionnaires, dialogues, and comic strips. This  
publication is usually made in connection with specific events and is  
distributed for free at congresses or exhibitions, social forums and  
rallies, where it reaches a broader cultural public.

Friday 16th March 2007 - Workshop

On Friday, the 16th of March an internal workshop will be held on the  
topic of „actualisations and concepts of history“. The participants  
are Roger Behrens, Alice Creischer, Hans-Joachim Lenger, Esther  
Leslie, Dmitry Vilensky, David Riff and the Space for Actualisation  
(Nina Köller, Kerstin Stakemeier). This workshop opens up to a  
programmatic start of the Space for Actualisation Hamburg.
The invited participants each present an actualisation or a  
problematisation of concepts of history which equate it to the idea  
of a linear progression of mankind. As the Space for Actualisation  
itself, also the workshop deals with the aim to very materially put  
current historicity into question and ask the question of how  
theoretical and practical fights for freedom can be fought. How can  
actualisations grasp for the pontentials of history and renew them?  
What are examples of such a praxis?

The whole workshop will be recorded in audio and video, to later be  
transcribed and made available on the website as a pdf-document and  
in the space itself as a video.


The Space for Actualisation

The Space for Actualisation is a non-commercial art- and exhibition  
project in Hamburg, initiated by Nina Köller (Berlin) and Kerstin  
Stakemeier (Hamburg). It deals with the present of that past, which  
remained unfulfilled, and looks back onto it with one specific  
interest: to not allow the loss of the past to the present. Instead  
fragments of the past will be actualised in the space itself.

Over a time-span of twelve months, twelve artists, artist-groups,  
musicians and other producers are invited to, each for one month,  
realise an actualisation. A fragment is dissected from its role in  
historicity – an artwork, an invention, an event, a song – to pull it  
into the present, to find out what the consequences of its  
actualisation are.

On thursday the 15th of March 2007 we will open the Space for  
Actualisation with the Russian artist group Chto delat? /// What is  
to be done?: A platform for engaged culture (Petersburg/Moscow/Nizhny  
Novgorod). In the following months projects are planned with Henry  
VIII's Wives (Berlin/Glasgow/Kopenhagen), Nine Budde (Berlin), Melvin  
Moti (Rotterdam), School of Zuversicht (Hamburg), Ginger Brooks  
Takahshi, Ulrike Müller (New York) Ben Watson and Thomas  
Baldischwyler (London/Hamburg), Katrin Bahrs, Ruth May, Susanne  
Winterling (Hamburg/Berlin), Alexandra Bircken and Nicole Wermers  
(Cologne/Hamburg/London) and others

In each month a one-day workshop will be held which deals with the  
political and artistic setting of the production of both, the  
actualised and the actualisation. History and present here are  
enfolded to be both documented and newly connected. New threads are  
mapped out in (art)history. At the cultural studies department of the  
University of Lüneburg a seminar will be held which accompanies the  
project, in which a wider range of actualisations is to be worked out  
and realized.
