„Gemaltwird immer noch, nur hat die Malerei es weitgehend aufgegeben, ihrer„Natur“ selbstreferentiell auf die Spur zu kommen. Hinter dem Bildsteht nicht die Natur, sondern andere Bilder, und das unzählige. DasGemälde ist nicht mehr da  Modell des Bildes. Es besitzt keinenSonderstatus mehr, sondern stellt eine Möglichkeit des Bildermachensdar, neben Fotografie, Film, Video oder digitaler Simulation. Die neuentechnischen Bildmedien haben die Frage nach dem „hinter immer stärkerauf das „zwischen“ den Bildern verlagert.“

Meditatingon the act of reading in Essais sur le Symbolique, the French literarycritic, Guy Rosolato, proposes the space of writing and reading as aseamless, parallel universe that one can enter and leave at will. Iread and I dream, Rosolato writes, my reading is thus a kind ofimpertinent absence... an exercise in ubiquity. Viewed in this lightthe author is no longer absolute ruler of the domain that he or shedescribes - - that other space that is the domain of writing (or ofpainting) - - just as the reader is neither exclusively outside orinside - - but is dissolving the one into the other - - of the textwhich is read. This is so because, as human subjects, we are, by ourvery natures, born into and of language. We know its vitalising workthrough our bodies - - muscles, bones and nervous system - - and wearit, as Roland Barthes wrote at the conclusion of his autobiography,like a clowns coat To find a version of style, then, which is noneauthorial, thoroughly democratic (one that reaches beyond thehistorical accretion of bourgeois values which still dominate) and isreflective of languages ubiquity (its limitlessness) is a task whichconfronts every artist conscious of their obligation to becontemporary. In Eddy De Vos paintings made since the MUHKA exhibitionof 2002, the dramatic shift of style that these works demonstrate, wediscover an artist who, either consciously or unconsciously, hasresponded powerfully to this pressing demand.
